Luke 14
Jesus healed a man with disease of swelling under skin (dropsy) on sabbath day.
And He happens to be going into the house of a certain chief of Pharisees, to eat bread on sabbath day, and they were watching Him.
And behold, there was a certain man who is dropsical (hydropikos) in front of Him.
And Jesus answered and speaks to the lawyers and the Pharisees, saying, is it lawful to minister healing or not on the sabbath day?
But, they kept quiet. And having laid hold upon him, he was healed and fully-freed.
And He says toward them, which of your son or an ox will fall into a hole, and will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?
but they can not answer back/dispute to these.
Parable that teaches on humility
Moreover, He speaks a parable on those invited and how they hold on to choosing uppermost position: telling them
when invited by anyone into a wedding feast, do not sit down in the uppermost place, lest at any time, a more honorable person than you, has been invited by him.
and, the one who invites you and him will come, telling you, give this one your place, and then with shame, you begin to have the last place.
But when you are invited, go forth and settle down in the last place, at least, when the one who invites you, comes, he will tell you, friend, come up higher, then it will be of glory to you before all people who are sitting at the table with you;
for all who exalt himself will be humbled, and the one who humble himself will be exalted.
Moreover, He told the one who invited Him, when you prepare the best meal (breakfast) or a supper, never call your friends, not even your brothers, nor your relatives, nor rich-neighbors, so that, not at any time, they will invite you in return, and it happens to be a recompense to you;
but when you prepare a reception, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind;
and you will be supremely blessed; for they have nothing to repay you; no doubt you will be repaid in the resurrection of the Righteous.
Moreover, someone sitting at the table, who hear this, tells Him, Supremely blessed are the ones who will eat bread in the kingdom of God.
Parable of Mega-supper: the supposedly invited guests and the available guests
So, He tells him, a certain man make a mega-supper, and invited many people.
And send his servants at the hour of supper, to tell those invited, to come, for it is ready now.
and from one to all, they begin to decline. The fist tells him, I buy a field, and I have need to go out to see it; I request you to have me excused.
And another says, I bought five pairs of oxen, and I am going to test them; I request you have me excused.
Another says, I marry a wife, and by this reason, I can not come.
And having come near, the servants bring these reports to their lord, and then being provoked, the house-master says to his servants, go out quickly unto the open-square and city-alley, and bring in here, the poor and the maimed and the blind and the lame.
and the servants says, lord, it has happens as you commanded, and there are still (more) space.
And the lord says to the servant, go out to the roads and fenced (places), and compel them to enter in, at least to fill my house entirely.
for, I tell you, that not even one of those men invited, will taste my supper.
Selflessness (Agape-love), a pre-requisite in following Jesus, as full-time followers.
Moreso, many crowd gather together to Him; and He turns around, and tells them,
if anyone will come to me, and do not love his own father less; and the mother, and the wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters; even in addition, his own soul, he cannot be My disciple;
someone who will not carry his own stake/post and come behind Me, cannot be My disciple.
No doubt, who is he, out of you, desiring to build a castle, and will not first of all, settle down and computes the cost, if he possesses unto minimum requirements (quorum)?
At least, he will not at any time, lay its foundation, and not exercise strength to fully finish it, and all who see it, will begin to mock him,
saying, this man begins to build, but can not finish.
Or which king, who is going forth to engage a war unto another king, and will not settle down, first of all, and consult, if he is capable by ten thousands to encounter with twenty thousands who are coming against him?
but if otherwise, still being much far away from them, he will send embassy, to request towards peace.
therefore, likewise, everyone from you, who does not bid farewell to all possession of his own, will not able to be My disciple.
Emphasy on being a salt to the world
Therefore, salt is good, but, in case, salt become tasteless (insipid), in what way will it season?
even, having thrown it outside, neither is it fit unto manure, nor unto soil. Those who have ears to hear, will listen attentively.
